People are re-evaluating their current situations and finding new objectives. If the desire for a new job has found its way onto your list, then there are a few steps you can put in place to ensure your goal becomes a reality.

1. Assess your current situation

Take a moment to gather your thoughts and reflect on the past year:

  • What were your notable accomplishments?
  • Where did your passions truly lie?
  • What aspects of your career brought you the most joy?

Write these down and evaluate whether you are truly maximizing your potential with your current employer. It's possible that you may discover a yearning for a more fulfilling role or even a completely different industry.

Additionally, utilise this time to carefully consider what career move aligns best with your personal circumstances. To support you on this path, we've created some essential career resources.

Take into account the importance of flexibility to you and how potential employers can accommodate your needs. Strive to find a healthy balance and establish boundaries that work for you.

2. Create your own learning and development plan

The landscape we currently find ourselves in is constantly being disrupted by new technologies and ways of working. As a result, we must always be up-skilling our own capabilities. After you've decided what type of role you want to pursue, start devising a Learning and Development plan.

This could include:

  • Online or face-to-face short courses
  • Publications you can subscribe to
  • Potential mentors

While creating your Learning and Development plan, always keep your long-term career goals in mind.

3. Update your resume

Even if you have been with the same company or in the same role for a while, it is still important to update your resume and LinkedIn profile. Take into consideration the new challenges you have faced throughout the year and the new technologies you have learned.

When updating your resume, remember to include a personal summary that highlights your achievements. Provide specific details about your accomplishments and don't forget to showcase your hobbies and interests. Read more tips and tricks from recruiters and download our free resume template.

4. Optimise your LinkedIn profile

Keeping your LinkedIn profile up-to-date is one of the most important things you can do as part of your job search. To optimise your LinkedIn profile for career opportunities, make sure you follow these 10 simple steps.

By following these steps, you can improve your personal brand and increase your chances of attracting potential employers and networking with industry professionals.

Remember, LinkedIn is not just a digital resume but a powerful tool to showcase your skills, experience, and professional brand to the world.

5. Network

An important part of landing a new job is letting people know that you're currently open to new opportunities. You can do this overtly by updating your LinkedIn title to read 'open to opportunities' or subtly by reaching out to past colleagues, friends, or recruiters.

Don't forget to send out a few messages to people within your network to understand how the job market is shaping up, and to remain ahead of the curve when it comes to companies considering candidates for new opportunities.

6. Reach out to a recruiter

It's a common misconception that recruiters are always the first ones to reach out to candidates when recruiting for a role. While this is certainly common practice, it's not always the case. If you're looking for a new job, proactively reach out to a recruiter specialising in your area of expertise for further, more personable advice on the above points.

After discussing what you want to get out from a career perspective, your recruiter can then discuss the roles they're recruiting for and the companies they're working with.
