Questions to ask at the end of an interview to get hired
By: Natalie Rogers

“So do you have any questions for us?” Everyone’s favourite question at the end of an interview, and one which believe it or not, can really make or break a hiring managers impression of you.
What may seem as a simple question - this is as much of an opportunity to learn more about the role or business to ensure it's aligned to your career goals and values as it is an opportunity to really impress your interviewer with your knowledge and curiosity about the organisation.
Because of this, you want to avoid asking “hygiene” questions where possible, Eg. “What does your flexible working look like?” (as this will likely be answered down the line in the hiring process).
But, on the contrary - there are certain questions when asked correctly, demonstrate your impeccable preparation (because yes, you did your research on the company before the interview). We like to call these killer questions.
Therefore, along with having your interview plan prepared, it’s a great idea to have some ready to ask questions to ask at the end of the conversation.
Why Your Questions Matter
Remember, hiring managers take note of your curiosity, preparation, and how well you understand the role. Strong questions demonstrate your strategic thinking and understanding of the business landscape, how you’ll approach challenges and add value to the team, and your enthusiasm and cultural alignment.
Here are some killer questions to get you started:
About the Role
These questions show you’re thinking like someone who’s already part of the team. You’re curious about impact, success, and challenges.
- "What are the immediate challenges you would like the person in this role to tackle?"
- "What will success look like in the role 12 months from now?”
- “What are the key projects or challenges someone would inherit stepping into the role?”
- “What do you see as the biggest opportunity for someone to make any impact in the role/team?”
- “What would a potential career path look like for someone stepping into this role”
- “What does the team look like that are reporting into this role? Are they high performers, or are there challenges in terms of development?”
About the Team/Culture:
Understanding how teams operate and what leadership looks like can help you assess if the environment suits you.
- "How would you describe the company culture?"
- "What’s the reputation of the XXX team like within the business? What are the relationships with other departments like? Is there any friction or tension?"
- " What traits make people successful in the business? What kind of people thrive?”
- “What has the turnover looked like within the team? What’s driven that?”
- “How would you describe your leadership style?”
- “What is your vision for the team? What gets you most excited for the future?”
About the Company:
These questions give insight into the company’s trajectory, goals, and how you can grow with them.
- "What are the key strategic objectives for the business within the next five years? What does that mean for the XXX team?”
- "How has the business changed since you joined?”
- “Why do you love working here? Why did you join? What’s made you stay, or keeps you energised?”
- "How does the business support people’s development and progression internally?"
Asking the right questions can be the differentiator that sets you apart from the competition. It’s your opportunity to shift the dynamic - showing that you’re assessing them just as much as they’re assessing you.
So, as you prepare for your next interview, bring a few killer questions along. You’ll not only leave a lasting impression but also gain the clarity you need to make the right career move.
