5 things to avoid in an interview
By: Natalie Rogers
Interviewing can be a stressful part of job seeking. Often getting in front of a recruiter or prospective employer is a challenge in itself, so when you're given the opportunity, you need to nail it. Here are five things to avoid in an interview:
1) Arriving late
Never arrive late to an interview. Plan your trip and allow plenty of time for the commute. If you arrive early, get a coffee and prepare; don't go into your interview until five minutes prior to your scheduled appointment. If you can't avoid arriving late it is polite to call and let the interviewer know.
2) Dressing inappropriately
As the old adage says, first impressions count. If you're unsure of the company's dress code err on the side of caution and wear professional attire; it is better to be too corporate than too casual. Make sure you are well groomed and avoid offensive smells, such as strong perfume, cologne or cigarette smoke.
3) Being underprepared
Research the company; what does the company do, what are their core values? Use the company website and Google to find out as much information as possible. This is your opportunity to prove that you are genuinely interested in the opportunity and that your skills and values are aligned to the role and company.
4) Waffling
Be short, sharp and succinct. It seems simple but it is important to actively listen during an interview. It is surprising how often candidates do not answer the question they have been asked! Take a moment, form a response and ask for the question to be repeated if you don't understand.
5) Speaking negatively of past employers
There is nothing more unappealing than someone who is bitter and ungrateful. Focus on the positive experiences and skills you gained that will help you add-value to the role you are interviewing for.
Avoiding these five simple things will stand you in good stead to impress your interviewer and progress to the next stage of the process.
